Chiropractic Alignment To A Healthy Powerful Life

Chiropractic Alignment To A Healthy Powerful Life

Our Spine Affects Our Whole Body – Think of it as Chakra Alignment

Chakras and the spine

The majority of people do not realize chiropractic care can influence organ function. However, there is an indirect connection between the spinal nerves in the body and your internal organ functions. Your internal organs are connected via the spinal cord and through nerve ganglia and plexuses. This is often referred to as “smaller brains” that directly affect the organs. When chiropractic care is given, it assists with keeping the spine free from interference and restore the proper curves in the spine. This marks the roadway that the nerve signals to flow freely and promotes proper organ functions. Twenty-six nerve levels provide neurological supply to vital organs and the musculoskeletal system. With that said, here are a few examples and the lack of chiropractic care results:

C1-blood supply to the head, pituitary gland, brain, face, middle ear, and sympathetic nervous system. Result: headaches, insomnia, head colds, ear infections, dizziness, or vertigo.

C2-eyes, optic nerve, auditory nerve, sinuses, forehead. Result: eye trouble, earache/infections, sinus trouble, allergy.

Treating Whiplash: What Patients Need to Know

Treating Whiplash: What Patients Need to Know

Treating Whiplash: What Patients Need to Know

Car accidents. Falls. Sports injuries. Amusement park accidents. Each of these can lead to immediate injuries. However, they can also lead to longer-term conditions– like whiplash. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) defines whiplash as “a soft tissue injury to the neck.” Whiplash can compromise a variety of underlying conditions, but neck sprains or neck strains are typically the main culprits.

While you may receive accident care on the scene or in an emergency room, a whiplash injury may not present symptoms immediately. While it’s essential to get timely medical care for your injuries, issues from conditions like whiplash may continue for days or weeks after the incident. Therefore, if your whiplash pain continues, you should consider seeking other treatment options, such as chiropractic care.

In this article, we’ll review the basics of whiplash, including what it is, how it may occur, and how best to treat it.

What is Whiplash?

As we mentioned earlier, whiplash is a soft tissue injury to the neck, often caused by sudden, jerking movements. The NIH says whiplash is generally accompanied by neck injuries that occur due to the “sudden flexion and extension” of the neck.

Approximately two-thirds of the cases of whiplash occur due to motor vehicle accidents. In addition, sports injuries, work injuries, falls, and other incidents may also result in whiplash. The symptoms of whiplash typically develop anywhere from 2 to 48 hours after the incident.

In most cases, patients with a whiplash injury may complain of stiffness and pain of the back. Whiplash patients may also complain of pain extending to the shoulders, arms, upper back, and even upper chest. Two-thirds of patients suffer from headaches, typically stemming from the base of their skull. Patients may also experience nausea, blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, and dizziness.

After an accident of any kind, especially a motor vehicle accident, it is important to be looked at by a doctor. While whiplash may seem minor at the moment, symptoms could continue to affect you for years to come.

Whiplash: What are the Most Common Symptoms?

Whiplash is most often the result of car accidents, high-impact sports or sudden falls. According to an article published in Current Reviews in Musculoskeletal Medicine, up to 83% of car accident collision victims suffer from whiplash.

However, as we mentioned earlier, whiplash can also result from more unique situations, such as amusement park rides. If you’ve experienced a high-speed injury, it’s important to look for whiplash symptoms following trauma of any kind.

Common whiplash symptoms include:

  • Neck stiffness or pain
  • Loss of range of motion (ROM) in the neck
  • Blurred vision
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Vertigo or dizziness
  • Memory problems
  • Tenderness in the arms, upper back, and shoulders

How is Whiplash Diagnosed?

Once you notice symptoms and visit a doctor, they will ask questions about the event and your symptoms. The doctor will want to know how well you are capable of performing everyday tasks. During the exam, the doctor will touch and move your neck, head, and arms. The doctor will typically check things such as the:

  • Neck and shoulders range of motion (ROM)
  • Tenderness in your neck, shoulders, or back
  • Reflexes, strength, and sensation in your limbs
  • Degree of motion that causes or increases your pain

After the exam, your doctor will do some imaging tests. While evidence of whiplash won’t generally be revealed on these tests, your doctor will likely order one to rule out other conditions that could be making your neck pain worse. These imaging tests include

  • X-RAYS: To identify fractures, dislocations, or arthritis in the neck
  • CT: Produces a cross-sectional image of the bone to show possible damage
  • MRI: In addition to bone injuries, this can detect soft tissue injuries like damage to the spinal cord, discs, or ligaments

What are the Most Effective Treatments for Whiplash Symptoms?

Experienced chiropractors, such as our expert team at Chiropractic Clinics of South Florida, can relieve pain and encourage healing in affected areas. Chiropractors typically use a few different treatment techniques to help patients relieve the aches and pains of whiplash. These include:

  • Chiropractic Adjustment: The primary treatment for joint dysfunction caused by whiplash is spinal manipulation. This involves carefully adjusting the joint by moving it carefully into a different position. Spinal manipulation may be done using both short thrusts and slower movements. This helps create mobility and encourages healing.
  • Muscle Relaxation and Muscle Stimulation: Muscle relaxation and muscle stimulation is one of the core methods a chiropractor will typically use to treat whiplash. A relaxation and stimulation protocol will focus on treating muscle dysfunction via light stretching and contractions (when appropriate). For very tight muscles, a chiropractor may use a more strenuous stretching protocol. When possible, however, chiropractors will generally use light touches to specific pressure points in order to relieve intramuscular tension.
  • McKenzie Exercises: The McKenzie Method is a highly effective, time-tested series of physical therapy exercises specifically designed to treat back and neck pain. Fortunately for patients, McKenzie exercises are also effective at reducing whiplash-related disc derangement. Disc derangement occurs when a disc is irritated or out of place, but is not yet fully herniated. The McKenzie technique typically involves an initial session in your chiropractor’s office. Your chiropractor will then teach you how to perform most of the exercises at home.
  • Ergonomic and lifestyle changes: Not all whiplash treatment options involve directly manipulating the spine. Instead, some types of treatment involve making changes to a patient’s daily lifestyle and posture in order to speed up their body’s natural healing process. Many individuals regularly engage in dysfunctional movement patterns at home, at work, or during their free time. An experienced chiropractor can teach you how to use your body more safely and effectively. They may also teach patients stress-reduction techniques to reduce overall muscular tension and promote additional healing.

What are the Most Common Ways to Treat Whiplash?

In general, the objectives of whiplash treatment include controlling your pain, restoring the normal range of motion (ROM) in your neck, and getting you back to your normal activities. To manage your pain in-between visits, your doctor may recommend:

  • Rest. If an injury is severe, 24-48 hours of rest is often ideal. However, resting beyond this may weaken the muscle and impair blood flow, hindering a patient’s recovery.
  • Heat or Cold. Either heat or cold can be applied to the neck for 15 minutes every three hours to help relieve pain and muscle aches.
  • Over-the-Counter Pain Medications. OTC pain relievers, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen), or Advil/Motrin IB (ibuprofen) can often control whiplash pain.
  • Prescription Medications. In more severe cases, patients may be given certain antidepressant drugs that have been shown to relieve nerve pain.
  • Injections. Lidocaine (Xylocaine) injections can often be used to help numb particularly painful areas. Lidocaine is especially effective used to decrease pain so that patients can do physical therapy more easily.

Every patient’s accident and medical history is different, so it’s essential to take an individualized approach to each and every case. That’s why we at South Florida Chiropractors develop highly specific treatments for each patient. For instance, some patients may benefit more from traditional chiropractic adjustment, whereas others may benefit most from muscle stimulation and heat/cold treatment.

Chiropractic Treatment After a Sports Injury

Chiropractic Treatment After a Sports Injury

Chiropractic Treatment After a Sports Injury

Being an athlete can be tough on your body. If you compete in sports, you understand the wear that gets put on your body when you constantly engage in activities like running, jumping, or tackling. Putting your body through this can often result in a series of painful sprains, strains, and tears. If you’ve recently experienced a sports-related injury, an experienced chiropractor can help you heal faster. Plus, a quality chiropractor may also be able to help you learn how to prevent sports-related injuries in the future.

Chiropractors treat and teach methods to prevent injuries of the neck, back, shoulder, knee, and ankles. Specifically, chiropractors are experts in the manual adjustment of the spine, ensuring that a patient’s bones are lined up and balanced. A good adjustment helps relieve tension throughout the body. This release of tension allows the body to function better. This means you’re less likely to become injured during sports (or daily activities). Most chiropractic techniques are intended to reduce pain and joint inflammation by restoring full function to a patient’s joints.

What Causes Sports-Related Injuries?

The main reasons athletes obtain sports injuries include forceful impacts, repetitive motions, over-training, or failure to warm up properly. Chiropractors help athletes by relieving their pain to help them heal faster after an injury. Regular visits promote quicker recovery after games and training, as well as better balance and overall performance.

What Does a Chiropractic Visit Look Like?

When you visit our chiropractic office, we’ll start by asking you questions about your health and perform a structural exam of your body, spine, and balance. We’ll also examine your back, limbs, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Using this information, we can determine a personalized treatment plan to address any issues you may have. We’ll also focus on laying the groundwork to prevent future injuries.

The two most common techniques chiropractors use are spinal manipulation and spinal mobilization. Below, we’ll review each of these methods and how they work:

  • Spinal manipulation. Your doctor will place you in different positions and perform a manual impulse to an affected joint. This releases pressure in the joint and aligns muscles and joints so they work the way they’re supposed to. In some cases, this can cause an audible crack, called cavitation, due to the release of gas that happens when the joint opens up and motion is restored.
  • Spinal mobilization. This is used for patients that require a gentle approach, and is done using tools and stretches to release pressure in joints.

Chiropractors may also incorporate other treatment methods to relieve pain such as ice, heat, or electric stimulation. Be sure to discuss all of your symptoms with your doctor for him or her to consider all treatment options.

What are the Most Common Prevention Techniques

In addition to treating injuries, chiropractors can help prevent them from occurring in the first place. If you’re about to implement a new exercise regime or join a sport, you should consider visiting a chiropractor first. A chiropractor can check your muscles and spine to detect any imbalances or tension. This can reduce current issues like pain and stiffness, while reducing the likelihood of potential injuries.

In regards to sports injuries, chiropractic care is second to none. If you’ve ever had a sports injury, you know the majority are soft tissue-related accidents or body mechanics-related. Chiropractors are the go-to doctors if you are a weekend warrior quarterback or a professional athlete.

Chiropractors believe that effective treatment is not only about pain relief, but also about addressing the underlying causes of the pain. These can often include:

  • Muscular imbalances
  • Biomechanical deficiencies
  • Improper techniques
  • Improper conditioning

Common Symptoms of Sports Injuries

When the body becomes injured because of sports or training, symptoms that can occur are:

  • Swelling
  • Burning, dull pain
  • Headaches
  • Muscle pain
  • Inflammation
  • Muscle spasms

Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t wise to push through the pain of an injury. Seek medical treatment if you meet any of the following conditions:

  • You are experiencing severe pain, swelling, or numbness.
  • You can’t put any weight on the affected area.
  • You are experiencing increased pain, swelling, and instability in a previously injured area.

Common Types of Sports Injuries

Depending on what type of sport you play, your injuries will likely differ. Common sports-related injuries can include:

  • Neck Injuries. Neck injuries, like whiplash, occur when the neck is quickly and forcefully pushed forward and back in a whipping motion. Athletes may want to consider approaching contact sports with more caution due to their higher risk of whiplash. In addition, damage to the spine around the neck region can cause inflammation, which results in pain and a limited range of motion.
  • Pinched Nerves. Pinched nerves due to a spinal injury sustained from sporting activities can be painful. Quality chiropractors have significant experience providing adjustment of the spine to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves. This can alleviate pain and allow the body to function better. Unfortunately, many patients suffer from pain for a prolonged period instead of addressing the issue head-on with a qualified chiropractor.
  • Sprains and Strains. Sprains can occur when a ligament is stretched too far or torn. Bones are connected by ligaments, so sprains and strains occur in the joints. You’ll typically find that most sprains occur in the wrists and ankles. There may be painful swelling, bruising, or experiences of temporary inability to move the joint. Strains occur when muscles or tendons are torn. A tendon connects your muscles to your bones, and if they’re pulled too far, a strain occurs. The most common strains are found in the back or hamstrings. There may be painful swelling or spasms, and you may experience a temporary inability to move the muscle.
  • Knee Injuries. Knee injuries are one of the most frequent problems for athletes. Runners can experience what is known as the runner’s knee, a tenderness felt near the knee cap. You may also experience pain on the sides of your knees and tendinitis. Knees can be more severely injured with bruising to the bone or damage to cartilage and ligaments. Four major ligaments are supporting the knee, and all can be damaged during sports activity. Knee injuries often occur from a lack of warming up, running too hard or too often, and blows or twists at the knee.
  • Dislocations. Contact and high-impact sports can cause dislocations, which happen when bones that form a joint become separated. If a joint becomes dislocated, the athlete will feel intense pain, and nerves may also become damaged due to the dislocation. The joint will need to be put back into place, and you may need to wear a sling until the swelling subsides, usually several weeks. Rehabilitation is often recommended if your shoulder is dislocated. This therapy can restore strength and range of motion.
  • Fractures. A bone can break or fracture for several reasons, either resulting from a one-time injury or repeated stress over time. If the one-time injury is an acute fracture, it will require an emergency treatment. In contrast, a stress fracture occurs when there is repetitive impact, further worsening whenever the athlete puts weight on the bone.

Fortunately, you can effectively treat many minor sports injuries at home using the RICE method of rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

If you’re experiencing pain from a sports injury, consider seeing a chiropractor. You may want to schedule regular check-ups to prevent injuries from occurring and to keep your body performing properly. Regular chiropractic treatment can reduce the risk of injury and improve your athletic performance.

Tension Headaches

A tension headache causes pressure and dull pain around the forehead, sides, or back of the head. It is often described as feeling like a tight band around your head. Tension headaches can last anywhere from 30 minutes to a week. They usually do not occur frequently and can be caused by many reasons like tension that causes muscles to tighten up, prolonged stress, and misalignment of the cervical or thoracic spine.

Migraine Headaches

If you or a loved one suffers from migraines-you know just how horrible one can be. Migraine headaches are the most severe and can be debilitating. There are many other symptoms that can accompany migraines like dizziness, sensitivity to light, nausea and vomiting, and blurred vision. It makes it impossible to participate in daily life activities which causes people to sometimes feel less equipped to function as their peers. The exact cause of migraines is unknown; however, many patients have reported improvement with chiropractic care.

Trauma, Toxins & Thoughts

Head trauma is described as a minor bump on the skull or a serious brain injury. A hard blow to the head which can cause Traumatic brain injury (TBI).  Toxins are a chemical factors such as foods and beverages, including alcohol and food additives. Thoughts can cause headaches due to emotional factors like stress, anxiety and depression.

Treating Headaches Caused by Tension in the Spine

Numerous research studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments are very effective for treating headaches and neck pain. Spinal manipulation may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck. Disc degeneration or prolapse, or facet joint arthritis in the neck can cause chronic headaches. Spinal Decompression works by gently stretching the spine over a period of several treatments and, electrical stimulation and ultrasound assist in promoting healing.

An injured spine can cause a variety of problems to your body’s overall function. Restore your optimal wellness and let Chirofitness help treat your spine’s misalignment through our non-invasive spinal manipulation and adjustment procedures.

Can Chiropractic Care Help with Arthritis?

Can Chiropractic Care Help with Arthritis?

Can Chiropractic Care Help with Arthritis?

Many people suffer every day when it comes to Arthritis of which can be a debilitating disease. The majority of us who seek medical treatment for arthritis, find different kinds of medications that will be prescribed to alleviate pain but also to treat the symptoms and prevent your disease from progressing into further joint damage. Some of the pain medications can be habit-forming or come with an array of unpleasant side effects. If you are looking to find a safe, natural treatment to manage the painful symptoms of arthritis, a chiropractic approach can be an option.

A common misconception when people think of chiropractors is that they just “crack” the back and neck, however, it is much more than that. Chiropractors are trained to use many techniques to help ease pain and tension that can be specific to your needs, including arthritis. The main goal in chiropractic care is to alleviate pain by making adjustments in the spine and skeleton to relieve stress and correct alignment and balance within the body.

Let us begin by talking about arthritis and how it wreaks havoc on the body. For millions of people of all ages, the inflammation that is associated with this disease can be debilitating and can appear suddenly or develop over time. The most common symptoms that are associated with Arthritis are pain, swelling, and reduced range of motion in the affected area. Two of the most common types of arthritis are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis both typically worsen with age. Osteoarthritis causes cartilage which is the hard, slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones where they form a joint- to break down. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the immune system attacks the joints, beginning with the lining of the joints. Autoimmune and systemic imbalances result in uric acid crystals that present themselves and are predominant due to underlying diseases such as Lupus or Psoriasis that contribute to the progression of arthritis.

Osteoarthritis:

The joints of cartilage wearing down due to weight-bearing such as the spine, knees, and hips but also appears commonly in the fingers. If the damage to the cartilage is severe enough, it can cause the bone to grind directly against another bone, resulting in extreme pain. This happens to be the most common type of arthritis and it affects people in their 20’s or 30’s. If you have a job that involves repetitive motion or if you are an athlete, you have a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative form of arthritis and wears down the joints over time, typically due to age. The cartilage between our joints experiences wears and tear that leads to this form of degenerative disease. With less cartilage, our joints may rub together, causing friction which leads to stiffness, swelling, and pain. Losing weight, staying active, strengthening muscles, and applying hot or cold therapies can help for a time, but they are simply short-term solutions. Chiropractic care from Chiropractic Clinic of South Florida aims to treat musculoskeletal issues such as arthritis, along with other common health concerns. Because osteoarthritis is a problem that lies in the joints, chiropractic care can restore alignment to the spine and other joints, as we address cartilage and lubricant deficiency due to central nervous system problems. It can help ease the pain as well as restore proper nerve communication to improve overall health and wellness.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis:

This type of arthritis is due to an autoimmune disorder that involves the immune system attacking the body’s tissues. Arthritis affects the lining (synovial membrane) of the joints, eventually wearing down the cartilage and bone which can cause joint erosion and deformity. The joints that are held together by tendons and ligaments are weakened and cause them to become loose and they no longer can keep the shape and alignment. Unbeknownst to many if left untreated it can cause damage to other parts of the body such as the skin, eyes, or internal organs. The decrease in joint tissue or fluid results in friction that leads to inflammation and pain. Misalignments of the spine can further exacerbate inflammation in the joint and will reduce the amount of healthy blood and fluid going these joints, only worsening the problem. Gentle adjustments from Chiropractic Clinics of South Florida will restore nerve communication so the body can function properly. This, in turn, reduces inflammation and decreases painful arthritis symptoms.

Some of the risk factors that accompany arthritis are:

  • Family history: Some types of arthritis run in families, so you may be more likely to develop arthritis if your parents or siblings have the disorder. Your genes can make you more susceptible to environmental factors that may trigger arthritis.
  • Age: The risk of many types of arthritis- including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout- increases with age.
  • Your sex: Women are more likely than men to develop rheumatoid arthritis, while most of the people who have gout, another type of arthritis, are men.
  • Previous joint injury: People who have injured a joint, perhaps while playing a sport, are more likely to eventually develop arthritis in that joint.
  • Obesity: Carrying excess pounds puts stress on joints, particularly your knees, hips, and spine. People with obesity have a higher risk of developing arthritis.

While any reputable chiropractor will say that every patient is different and will require a different type of care, for the most part, they will focus on realigning the parts of the body that have been impacted by arthritic pain, and relieve the tension that has built up over time. Some of the benefits of chiropractic treatments for arthritis include:

  • Reduced inflammation throughout the body caused by arthritis
  • Improved ability to move and better joint flexibility
  • Reduced pain across affected areas and reduced referred pain in other parts of the body
  • A better quality of life and ability to perform physical tasks

It is very common for chiropractic care to use a wide range of treatments for arthritis patients, depending on their needs and the severity of their case. Some patients might benefit greatly from traditional chiropractic adjustments to reduce pain and readjust their body, while for others swelling in the joints might make ultrasound therapy the better choice.

Ultrasound therapy is utilizing vibrations to release heat and energy around muscles and joints, helps to reduce pain and tension caused by arthritis. It is then followed directly by a chiropractic adjustment which allows the use of controlled force to adjust the position of the bones and joints. This can be extremely helpful in improving mobility in the body and reducing pain. Arthritis in one area of the body can also cause issues in other parts, for example, knee pain causing a limp with lead to back pain. Chiropractors can help treat these areas of secondary pain and misalignment, reducing the overall suffering of the patient.

Chiropractic care has been known to slow down or even stop the progression of arthritis. You will see the benefits with the decrease of pain and the Chiropractic Clinics of South Florida and our 7 locations across South Florida are here for your arthritic needs.
